Since 1961, the PACE™ Organization has been helping people throughout the English-speaking world expand their horizons, handle stress in more healthy ways and generally make better use of their talents and training. Our four hour communications workshop focuses on the process of communicating -- something we all do a lot of. The problem is, sometimes we do this well . . . sometimes not so well. We start our Communications Workshop with the PACE™ PALETTE.

The PACE™ PALETTE is based on the Jungian concept that people have four basic "temperament" patterns. Actually, Carl Jung adapted the idea from Hippocrates, and others "stand on Jung’s shoulders" with further research and study. Some of that work has resulted in excellent test instruments used by professionals, but not much in the way of practical tools that an individual can use in day-to-day activity at home and on the job.

So, we have adapted the excellent work of Jung, Eric Fromm, Myers-Briggs and Keirsey into a very clear, simple and usable system. It is now an integral part of our PACE™ Communications Workshop, and we also offer customized PACE™ PALETTE Workshops for management groups, sales people and other teams within the client organization.

There is nothing complicated about the PACE™ PALETTE. Everyone understands it right away.

Each of the four basic temperament or personality patterns is assigned a color and everyone quickly sees that each person has all four colors - but in different proportions.

The first "Aha!" comes as people see how the PACE™ PALETTE applies to their own behavior and communications. "Wow! That really is how I think!" is a typical reaction. In the PACE™ PALETTE Workshop people with the same dominant temperament are given the opportunity to compare notes and discover the similar ways in which they respond to life’s opportunities and disasters.

Next comes the realization that co-workers, family and friends may have a different temperament or personality pattern - and that different is okay! In fact, it can make life more interesting and rewarding.

An important realization that always goes with an introduction to the PACE™ PALETTE tool kit is the fact that any team works best when each of the colors is represented in the group. The world (and the company) needs all four patterns.

Probably the most important and most lasting result of the PACE™ PALETTE Workshop is the improvement in interpersonal communications. Managers, sales professionals, team leaders, people in every role within an organization, now understand and appreciate the other person’s way of looking at the world. And, since each of us has all four of the basic patterns, we can easily develop the ability to empathize - to understand, acknowledge and honor the differences which may have been puzzling or even irritating in the past.

The PACE™ PALETTE is a lot of fun. Every workshop becomes highly participative and playful. But the lasting results are profound and valuable - to each individual and to the organization as a whole.

Once everyone has determined their dominant temperament pattern, we put this knowledge to use in a very practical and participatory way . To do this, we use our PACE™ PUZZLE -- a communication exercise that shows why it is often so difficult for people to understand each other. The team will see graphically some of the reasons why people have such a difficult time with the apparently simple process of giving instructions, making sales or describing an experience to someone else. After the exercise is completed, we identify and review specifically the strategies used by the different temperament types, and pinpoint what worked those strategies and what did not.

The solution to the PACE™ PUZZLE is always a surprise. The biggest surprise, however, is what they learn and retain by going through the process!
